There is a common perception that emerging adulthood is a period of time during which people attempt to investigate their identity in addition to their skills and capacities. Emerging adults make decisions about who they are and what they want to become in their lives. They also have expectations about their academic performance, job, and many aspects of their personal lives. Emerging adulthood is a word that has been used to describe a period of development that goes from the ages of 18 to 23 years old. During this time, people go through a variety of life changes that occur while they are in their twenties (Wood et al., 2018).


Many of the characteristics that are quite common in emerging adults include the fact that during this time period, they want to shape their identity, that they go through a lot of instability and inconsistencies in their thoughts and actions, that they focus on themselves in the sense that they strive to build their identity and get recognized by others, and that at the same time, they do not fear to experiment with different ideas as well as challenges (Holloway et al., 2010).

The subject of emerging adulthood is the one that I have chosen because it will assist me in recognizing and relating to the different emotions, ideas, and reasons that are behind the responses of emerging adults to certain circumstances. According to Holloway et al. (2010), the subject will assist me in gaining a better understanding of the transitions that a developing adult goes through in their life. This will allow me to relate to and establish connections with my own transitions, which will ultimately contribute to the enhancement of my personal and professional growth and development. In addition to this, I have decided to focus on the issue of emerging adulthood because I believe that it will assist me in determining the internal and external social, psychological, political, and other aspects that play a role in the decision-making process of emerging adults.

Because of this, the study topic that will be the primary focus of attention is

.. To what extent do societal concerns or variables have an impact on the lives and choices of young people who are just entering adulthood?

During the course of the assignment, the following hypotheses will be investigated:

  • During the transition from childhood to emerging adulthood, economic instability is a crucial factor that plays a part in the impulse to leave home.

Therefore, it is important to highlight that based on the study subject and issue, my intention is to investigate the ways in which social components such as motherhood, the economy, work, gender, and other aspects play a part in the lives of emerging adults, as well as the ways in which the aforementioned variables aide in the process of decision-making for these individuals. By providing a response to the topic that was presented earlier, I intend to get an understanding of the ways in which economic stability and instability have a direct influence on the choices that emerging adults make, as well as the reasons why some people choose to remain at home and pursue their jobs, while others choose to live independently.

In addition to this, I will learn from the study how economic variables play a key role in developing the identity and cognitive processes of a person, which eventually motivates them to leave their families and pursue their profession independently. This is something that I will learn. In addition to this, I am interested in gaining an understanding of the emotions and ideas that young people experience while they are leaving their homes, as well as the expectations that they have for their life as independent adults.

  • What do you believe the effects of moving out of the family home and living on one's own will be on the formation of a more significant sense of identity?

All of these questions will be posed to a fellow student via the process of an interview, which will be conducted over a video chat in order to comply with the procedure established by Covid19 and to guarantee the interviewee's and my own safety. In order for me to analyze and detect non-verbal forms of communication as well as discrepancies between the interviewee's sentiments and the words that they say, I will be conducting the interview.

A Question and Hypothesis for Further Research

With the aid of the first interview question, both my fellow student and I will be able to judge the degree to which they are economically stable or unstable, which will be of great use in providing truthful responses to the other questions. When it comes to establishing a job for himself, the second question is a broad one that will assist in obtaining the interviewee's opinions about whether or not he would choose to remain with his parents over becoming independent. With the aid of the third question, I will be able to comprehend the rationale behind the choice that the respondent made in response to the second question, which will enable me to establish a connection between the decision and the situation of the economy.

The fourth query is a straightforward inquiry that will assist me in understanding the significance of a consistent income in the lives of young people and the manner in which the economy influences the choices that they make. The last question will assist in showing how the choice to leave home will assist in the process of establishing a better identity for oneself, which is fairly connected to the issue of economics.

Consequently, each of the issues has a connection, either directly or indirectly, to the social element of income or economic stability or instability, and as a result, they will be of assistance in answering the research question and formulating the hypothesis.

The individual that was being interviewed was a man who was twenty years old. In response to the first question, he said in an open and honest manner that he comes from a middle-class home and that he has seen his parents struggle to provide the finest education possible for him and his brother by making concessions and giving up their many interests and hobbies. Despite the fact that he is financially comfortable, he expressed his desire to have a greater salary and a more secure financial situation than his parents.

According to him, living alone will make him less reliant on his parents, allowing him to make his own choices without interference from his parents. He immediately agreed to the second question since he believes that this would be the case. In addition to this, he wants to live on his own and pursue his work in order to alleviate the burden that his parents feel over his financial situation. In addition to this, leaving home will provide him with a larger degree of autonomy to do employment according to his own preferences, which will assist in giving him the ability to become monetarily independent as well as stable.

As compared to parents of children who are economically stable and are quite involved in their children's career options, the interviewee stated that he would prefer to leave home and pursue his career because middle-class parents are quite intrusive when it comes to making life decisions for their children and are quite involved in their career options. This could potentially hinder his growth and could make it more difficult for him to develop his own identity.

For the fourth question, the interviewee stated that if he had been economically well-established, he would never have left his home to pursue a career. This is due to the fact that parents who are economically well-established tend to give their children more freedom in decision-making when it comes to their career, and they also tend to be less controlling when it comes to other aspects of their lives. For example, they do not mind whether their children want to pursue a job or finish their academics. This is in contrast to the parents of middle-class families, who insist that their children get a full degree in order to improve their chances of finding better employment possibilities and do not want their children to experiment with other career paths. Aside from this, he also said that children already have an identity when their parents are economically secure. This is because their parents already have a name in society and social surroundings, and this name is naturally given to their children.

An Interview with a Fellow Student

The interviewee once again concurred that leaving home will contribute to a better development of identity because he will be able to make his own career choices regarding employment and academics. Additionally, he will have the opportunity to earn early in life, which will assist him in building his identity more quickly. This is because economic stability is clearly aligned with the identity of a person. Once he leaves home, he will be able to explore his skills and capabilities, which will further make him recognized and identified in the social environment. Additionally, he will become economically independent, which means that he will no longer be dependent on his parents to make decisions and choices for him. At the same time, he will be able to be of some assistance to his parents as a result of his economic independence.

Therefore, based on the findings of the study and the findings, it is not difficult to assert that economic instability plays a significant part in the phenomenon of young people leaving their homes, which also demonstrates that my theory is accurate. The findings provide a clear explanation for why emerging adults want to achieve economic independence and stability. This is because they believe that economic stability is associated with the formation of identity and more autonomy, both of which can only be achieved after they leave their home, which also reduces the amount of interference from their parents.

In order to have a better understanding of how economic instability influences young people to leave their families and live independently, exchange theory will be of great assistance. In the case of emerging adults, for instance, they consider the advantages and disadvantages of remaining at home with their parents during times of economic stability and volatility (Yin, 2018). They consider the advantages of remaining at home, such as getting support from their parents, obtaining a higher academic degree, and receiving financial assistance (Holloway et al., 2010). They balance the costs of paying rent, transportation, and other expenses while living at home.

 On the other hand, emerging adults who have less economic security assess the expense of such items against the value of living independently, making their own choices about their careers and their lives, which will contribute to the rapid development of their identities. While the interviewee has honestly listed his reasons for staying at home if he was economically well established, he has also listed the reasons why he would leave his home and live independently in order to become economically secure and more stable than his parents with independent career choices. This is an example of a similar cost and benefit that has been weighed by the interviewee.

For the second time, ecological systems theory is clearly aligned and will be of assistance in providing support for the study issue. According to Van et al. (2019), the theory proposes that during the course of their lives, people are subjected to a variety of experiences and changes, each of which has a direct impact on the behaviors and acts that they participate in. For instance, globalization has resulted in a great deal of technical developments and work chances for a variety of people. These opportunities provide individuals with the opportunity to explore their skills, knowledge, and capacities (Van et al., 2019). As a result, it is possible to assert that technological advancements and increased employment opportunities have had an effect on the thought processes and behaviors of emerging adults. According to Holloway et al. (2010), there are a number of people who prefer to leave their homes and explore their capabilities as a result of technological advancements. 

Students of all levels now have access to a wide variety of employment opportunities, which not only helps them realise their potential for economic and personal independence but also contributes to the development of their sense of self. Therefore, since economically unstable young people have a variety of professional and employment opportunities available to them, many desire to leave home so that they may achieve economic independence at an earlier age. As a consequence, the hypothesis may be clearly connected with the facts, which demonstrate how social variables and economic instability drive young people to go away from their families.

There are a number of restrictions that apply to my study. Because of time constraints and personnel constraints, I was only able to do an interview with one of my classmates, despite the fact that I should have conducted interviews with more of them in order to get a more comprehensive grasp of the subject matter. The second problem with the study is that it is biased since it only supports one side of the issue, and the conclusions that were drawn were based on a single perspective. If I had conducted interviews with a greater number of people, I would have been able to get counterarguments on the reasons why adults who are economically unstable would not wish to leave their homes.

In addition to this, in order to strike a balance in my study, I might also investigate the reasons why economically well-established emerging adults would want to leave or remain at home. This would have been beneficial in terms of making my research believable and relevant.
