The ethical norms of behavior that nurses are required to adhere to throughout the course of their professional work are the primary topic of this paper. Nursing is a career that works with the health care sector, which focuses on the care and well-being of people, families, and communities in order to ensure that they are able to keep a happy and healthy lifestyle. In addition, the paper identifies a number of humanistic aims that nurses are required to take into consideration when they are doing their professions. Moreover, it addresses the function of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), which is responsible for establishing guidelines for the tasks that nurses carry out when they are practicing. Also included is an explanation of the case study of Theo, who is the patient who is experiencing depression and requires quick therapy. Consequently, this is the place where all of the professional practices, standards, and norms are mentioned.
In 1953, the International Council of Nurses was the institution that first endorsed this international code of ethics. Specifically, it is comprised of four components that serve as the basis for ethical behavior requirements. Through its assistance, I have been able to cultivate my professional identity and improve my performance. It serves as a guide that directs each and every action that is carried out, taking into account the moral and social standards that are in place. By way of illustration, these ethical practices are used in the formulation of ways to address moral anguish that may be brought on by any condition. In addition to this, it train the whole team to cope with global concerns that are associated with health inequalities while maintaining a broader perspective on the common good. Specifically, Batten, Lonarski, and Szilagyi (2018)
Because of this, I am able to assume personal responsibility for those individuals who need nursing care. In addition to this, we as nurses work to foster an atmosphere that respects the culture, beliefs, and values of everyone, including the person, their family, and the community in which they live. I am a nurse, and I believe that it is my responsibility to spread the word that we should take action to address the social and health needs of the general people. In accordance with this, I also make certain that the person and family members of the patient get information that is correct, adequate, and timely about the medicine and therapy that they are receiving, which allows them to make their own decisions. In addition, I gained the knowledge necessary to maintain a high level of confidentiality and environmental safety in the job. I was able to have a better understanding of the professional values that are important to me by accepting these conducts (Dobrowolska and et al., 2007). These values include respect, justice, equality, responsibility, caring, compassion, empathy, transparency, and integrity. Respecting the dignity and universal rights of all people, including patients and the people who care for them, is made easier for me by this.
This profession gives me the opportunity to assume personal responsibility and accountability for my professional activity, as stipulated by this code of conduct. In light of this, I ensure that I continue to be competent by regularly participating in professional development courses and by engaging in continuous learning strategies. Alongside this, I also make certain that the most cutting-edge technology is used in the safest possible manner.
In accordance with this, I am responsible for defining and putting into effect standards of nursing practice, research, and education. Here, I take an active role in increasing professional knowledge that is based on research, which further contributes to the development of evidence-based practice procedures. In addition to this, I devote a significant amount of time to the development and implementation of research results that will lead to better outcomes for people and the families of those persons.
In accordance with the code of conduct, I am taught to take care of my relationships with my coworkers in a way that is both friendly and healthy while I am engaged in professional activity. In conjunction with this, I am able to get a more profound comprehension of the tasks and obligations that I, as well as other workers, am responsible for.
This code acts as a source of guidance for me on the activities and choices that I should carry out. As a non-negotiable norm, it is imperative that all health care providers adhere to it at all times, regardless of the circumstances. In addition to this, it serves as a reminder to carry out every activity with the intention of contributing to the betterment of society. As an additional benefit, it assists me in comprehending a variety of regulations that pertain to my work. (2005) According to Daly
These codes of conduct are professional guidelines that nurses, midwives, and nursing associates are required to adhere to in order to get registered in their respective healthcare professions. On the other hand, when it comes to ethical principles, it makes it very obvious what kinds of behaviors, intents, and motivations are appreciated within the parameters of the company. In other words, they are the moral or ethical standards that dictate how one ought to conduct themselves. According to Nummen and others (2011) Furthermore, these ethical guidelines are necessary in health care systems because they assist workers in recognizing challenges and in making sound judgments and choices that are founded on the values. The following are some standards that I adhere to in order to perform my nursing profession in an honest and honorable manner.
As a result, these criteria of the ICN are used as a guide in order to carry out professional service.
In this particular case study, it is said that Theo is experiencing depression and has made two attempts to take his own life. Depression is a prevalent mental illness that impacts a significant number of individuals on a daily basis. It does not have a specific age range that is recognized, and it may be found in persons of either gender. On a regular basis, he had the sensation that someone was sitting on his chest, and he was in continual pain as a result of this. In this situation, in accordance with the code of conduct that was discussed before, I will make consistent attempts to light up his spirits by talking to him and gaining an understanding of all of his interests. This will be the first step that I will do to manage the case. By virtue of this sympathetic character, the patient is able to experience a sense of relief, knowing that someone is not criticizing them but rather understanding their sentiments. I shall make an effort to win his confidence on the therapy for depression and the degree to which it has been successful for patients. In addition to this, I will inform him on the percentage of therapies that are successful in boosting his feeling of self-assurance. Being able to work with individuals that are sad on an almost daily basis is something that we do very often. (2022) According to Torrens University in Australia. The nursing care plan that I will prepare for him will be in accordance with my professional practice. In order to provide the necessary therapy to the client, these plans assist in identifying the degree of impairment that is needed by evaluating the client's capacity for stress management and diagnosing the client's present position. In addition, I will urge him to participate in activities that take place outside in order to battle sadness, even if they are not feeling like doing such activities. Therefore, assisting him in participating in activities that excite him would be beneficial to his battle against this chronic condition.
It has been determined, in light of the report that was presented earlier, that professional practice is carried out in accordance with relevant ethical standards and regulations. The ICN code of ethics is explained in this document, which assists in carrying out acts in a manner that is both professional and ethical. When carried out in the context of management, teaching, research, or practice, it provides assistance in doing routine actions. Along with this, the manner in which people with chronic illnesses might be treated in an ethical manner is elaborated upon in detail.
