Depression as a Psychological Disorder: Case Study of Jim Carrey's Struggles and Treatment

Depression as a Psychological Disorder

The objective of the report is to examine an illness included in the DSM-5 that has impacted the life of a prominent actor or public figure. Jim Carrey is a highly acclaimed actor, writer, and comedian in Hollywood, recognized for his exceptional skill in films and television series. Jim Carrey had prolonged depression and publicly advocated for awareness for others (Strakowski & Nelson, 2015). Carrey recognized that it is futile to engage in the incessant endeavor of constructing an inauthentic persona. It is only ego; the want for recognition and significance, to be valued. Nevertheless, the identities entail considerable agony. Depression differs from sorrow in that sadness is a transient emotional state, but depression endures for an extended duration.

Depression is a mental disorder linked to major depressive disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, persistent depressive disorder, substance or medication-induced disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and other specified or unspecified depressive disorders (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 2017). The prevalent symptoms of depression include sorrow, loneliness, irritability, and alterations in physical and cognitive functioning, resulting in an individual's inability to operate effectively. The diagnosis of depression is defined by episodes lasting a minimum of two weeks, resulting in alterations in cognition, affect, neurovegetative function, and inter-episode remissions (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 2017). The symptoms are recurring and manifest in the majority of instances. The symptoms of depression may vary from moderate to severe and include:

  • Experiencing sadness or gloomy mood almost every other day
  • Utter disinterest in previously appreciated activities
  • Decreased appetite - weight fluctuation
  • Insufficient sleep
  • Guilt is a sense of unworthiness
  • Challenges in focus, cognition, or participation in critical decision-making
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Energy depletion

To be diagnosed with depression, two or more symptoms must persist for a duration of two weeks. Approximately 16.6% of individuals experience depression at some stage in their life (Fuller Thomson et al., 2016). It may manifest at any age; however, it predominantly occurs around late adolescence. Women have a higher susceptibility to depression compared to males (Kuehner, 2017). Parental or familial depression may contribute to the onset of depression.

Carey mostly experienced sadness or depression on most days, losing interest in his acting profession, and felt shame and unworthiness while attempting to discover his true identity outside the confines of celebrity. According to the DSM, Carrey did not exhibit symptoms like as suicidal ideation or deficits in focus or attention.

Carrey has achieved success in his career with exceptional performances that have garnered acclaim from audiences. Carey has consistently shown a funny disposition and cultivated an illusion of superiority due to his chosen vocation. The ego intensified his need for continual improvement, seizing every opportunity to excel. He has garnered accolades for his exceptional performances in films that achieved international acclaim and became global successes.

During the height of his success, he grappled with overwhelming and challenging despair. The depressive pattern was linked to the ego associated with being highly esteemed, a desire to be "someone." Carrey said in an interview, “The sensation of wholeness differs from that of individuality.” The pursuit of becoming an exceptional person led him into depression, necessitating intermittent treatment with Prozac. Carrey withdrew from stardom and relinquished his self-centeredness in pursuit of genuine significance.

Manifestations and Assessment of Depression
Depression is extensively examined and analyzed by experts on the intricacies of the illness. Acharya et al. (2015) published an article indicating that depression is a mental condition characterized by chronic mood alterations or a diminished emotional state in the individual afflicted. Depression is difficult to identify in its early stages; nevertheless, monitoring the condition may prevent it from escalating to a severe level. Carrey has had protracted depressed spells throughout his career, resulting in a diminished sense of self-worth, leading him to withdraw from the pursuit of belonging.

Approximately 22% of the global population is impacted by mental illness. Approximately 300 million individuals are impacted by the most prevalent mental disease, depression. Although depression is prevalent and may last for an extended duration, it is amenable to treatment via numerous approaches. Fundamental interventions for addressing depression may include implementing key lifestyle modifications such as enhancing sleep quality, maintaining cleanliness, adopting a nutritious diet, and engaging in regular physical activity. Psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are regarded as the most effective treatments for depression in adults (Ng et al., 2017). In basic health care, psychotherapies are the most effective treatment for depression. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Behavioural Activation Therapy (BAT), and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) are methods of psychotherapy administered by qualified therapists. Patients often choose non-pharmacological treatments that do not need medication use. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a kind of psychotherapy, is an effective treatment modality for people with mild to severe depression. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) aids in recognizing negative thoughts and substituting them with more constructive and positive thought patterns, thereby alleviating anxiety and depression. If psychotherapy yields no improvement, pharmacological options such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, and mirtazapine may be considered. Meticulously formulated clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) enhance patient treatment. Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) may be used in the pharmaceutical management of depression; however, they are time- and resource-intensive when assisting patients with partial responsiveness (Gabriel et al., 2020). Therapies are deemed beneficial due to their prolonged efficacy, leading patients to discontinue medication after a certain time (Cuijpers et al., 2019). Depression often arises from loneliness, and conversing with a therapist may facilitate the expression of emotions, aiding in the modification of behavior and thinking processes, as opposed to relying only on medicine, which serves as a short-term solution for the disease.

As a psychology expert, the primary purpose is to provide solace to clients and attentively listen to their concerns without judgment. Occasionally, the information obtained from clients adversely affects the therapist, contributing to the mental health challenges experienced by the therapist. Consulting a therapist is essential for personal well-being, self-care, appropriate medicine, and enough rest. Families and peer networks provide as a support structure in individuals' lives, which may aid psychologists in maintaining well-being.

Conclusion

The preceding discussion indicates that depression is a prevalent and significant mental disorder that may affect individuals from many walks of life, even prominent actors such as Jim Carrey. Depression endures for an extended duration, disrupting an individual's usual functioning. It is a manageable condition that is best addressed with pharmacological interventions and psychotherapeutic approaches. Jim Carrey used pharmaceutical therapy, which alleviated his depression, and by verbalizing his concerns and altering his mindset, he adopted a more positive outlook on life. In any profession, incidents may arise that might precipitate different mental diseases, necessitating appropriate care and treatment by a qualified therapist.
